More Than 1,100 Hours Donated in 2019

Volunteer Appreciation

April is National Volunteer Recognition Month, and it’s a great opportunity to express our thanks to the people who support the work of JFS through the selfless contribution of their time, energy and talent.

In 2019 we were fortunate to engage 140 volunteers who gave over 1,100 hours in a number of ways, from serving on our board and committees, to working in the office, to working in direct service to our clients, and packing and delivering B’Yachad bags. We want to thank those who help JFS achieve its mission.

Several of our volunteers are working with clients who lack social interaction and support. We work with individuals who are at risk of isolation and loneliness, and who benefit from a helping hand or a friendly conversation to stay physically and emotionally healthy.

One volunteer visited her client as part of her involvement as a JFS para-chaplain for several years. She learned about the opportunity to volunteer in this role and was motivated by the potential impact she could have on an older person’s life. The volunteer has formed a rich relationship with her client and believes that the benefits go both ways. “Due to some recent life changes, this client has had less social interaction, so she really looks forward to my visits,” she says. “She appreciates hearing what’s going on in my life, especially stories about my travels. Because she doesn’t have many Jewish neighbors in her building, our connection around holidays and traditions is especially meaningful to her.”

The volunteer also feels many personal benefits from visiting with her client including an enhanced sense of purpose. “As I move into this chapter in my own life, this volunteer experience has helped me understand aging from the inside out,” she said. These success stories are repeated by those on both sides of the volunteer relationship. With our current health crisis, our clients are especially vulnerable, so there is an increased need for people who are willing to connect with folks over the phone or through video chat. If you are interested in joining the JFS volunteer community, please reach out to Margie Solomon, Volunteer Engagement Specialist, at (651) 690-8907.
