Senior Bullying Addressed in PresentationAugust 1, 2018
JFS Therapist Beth Johnson recently visited Knollwood Apartments to speak to a group of residents about senior bullying. Her goal for the presentation was to educate residents about what constitutes bullying, causes of the problem, and how to manage such conflicts.
When we think of bullying, we think of school age children. But research shows that one in five seniors are bullied in senior housing. Click here to read an article by the Associated Press featured on AARP’s website.
Beth was surprised to find that residents didn’t need much education on the problem. Many of them shared their own experiences with bullying by their senior peers. The most common problem was exclusion and lack of tolerance for differences.
Beth shared with residents different communication tools to help decrease disrespectful communication and behaviors. The residents were very receptive to hearing about the tools, and shared their own ideas about what has worked in the past. Beth concluded the presentation with a model for resolving conflict.
