JFS On Hand For Israel@70 Celebration

Posted on by Molly Kitching

On Sunday, April 22, the Twin Cities Jewish community came together to celebrate Israel’s 70th Independence Day. People of all ages, religions, and backgrounds spent a beautiful day enjoying Israel-related activities, music, and entertainment.

The event drew a huge and highly engaged crowd to the Minneapolis Event Center, where activities took place on two floors and on the grounds overlooking the Mississippi River.

The event included displays and family-friendly activities to spotlight everything Israel. There was Mediterranean food, face-painting, crafts, and even a mock Western Wall; plus music by talented choirs and bands from Israel and various Twin Cities choral groups. At one point, visitors could be seen rocking out in a long dance line surrounding the venue!

JFS participated with a photo display featuring Centenarians in Israel, and educational discussion with Eilon Caspi, PhD. The portraits were provided by JDC-ESHEL, a nationally based non-governmental organization involved in the planning and development of services for elders in Israel.

Dr. Caspi of Dementia Behavior Consulting LLC, and a member of the Twin Cities Jewish Alzheimer’s Task Force, has been learning about ESHEL’s work and the quality of care and life for elders. At the event, he shared his knowledge with over 75 visitors to the JFS booth.

Margie Solomon, Volunteer Engagement Specialist at JFS was on hand to greet visitors and share information on JFS services for the elderly, including dementia coaching. JFS also participates in the Dementia Friends program that utilizes trained volunteers to teach businesses and organizations throughout the community about the disease and provides tips for creating dementia-friendly communities throughout Minnesota.
